Happy New Year!!

I would like to wish all of my readers a happy and safe New Year.  My new year's resolution for the year 2011 is to find and create time to blog more.  I have tons of tutorial ideas and cannot wait to create videos to share with you all. I look forward to reading all of your emails and comments this year.

Could 2011 be "the year of Revit"?

Look forward to seeing you all next year!

Revit Site and Toposurface Tutorials

Thanks to The Revit Clinic for the find.  I think these tutorials, when paired with my "Studio Topo Tips" will cure what my teachers are called "floating building syndrome".  I know the toposofuces dont look great when rendered, but your sections and elevations looks 100 times better with some earth around them....

Firefox Add-on for Autodesk Design Review graduates from Autodesk Labs - Cool!

This could be a great thing for Revit and I can see it being very useful in a school setting...

Firefox Add-on for Autodesk Design Review graduates from Autodesk Labs

Last month we retired the Firefox Add-on for Autodesk Design Review. Thanks to everyone who downloaded the technology preview over the last 22 months:

Design By Many

What a great idea from the guys at CASE....

..Welcome to the public Beta of DesignByMany!!DesignByMany is a challenge based design technology community. Users post challenges to the community along with their design source files. The community can then post responses with their own source files to solve the challenge. They can also comment on the challenge and interact with other designers throughout the process.

DesignByMany is an extension of DesignReform and is hosted and maintained by CASE. DesignByMany has partnered with Hewlett Packard as an exclusive sponsor for the first year.
HP will be sponsoring monthly challenges and providing prizes such as plotters and printers. Sponsored challenges will be judged by designers, architects, engineers, contractors and others involved in the process of making buildings.

DesignByMany is itself a work in progress and we’re trying our best to get all the features you need to create challenges and share projects. If you have any ideas or feedback PLEASE let us know by sending an email to info@case-inc.com.

Thanks VERY much,

DesignByMany Team...

Revit Tutorial (Vasari) - Adaptive Components (Design Reform)

The very first Revit video I ever watched was a Design Reform, David Fano, video... I had the pleasure of taking his class at AU and here are a couple little videos that dive a bit into the world of adaptive components:

Go check out his website!

Revit Tutorial - Parametric Patters 2 (buildz)

Zach, do not stop producing these insanely great videos...  People always ask me, "So, who knows Revit better than you?"  Of course, I can count 15 people right away but the first one that always pops in my head is Zach Kron.  Every single reader of mine who, I assume, uses Revit should subscribe to his blog... or at least check it everyday!

In all honestly, I felt as if I hit a plateau in Revit a few months back. I felt like it became more of a tool that created the images and documents I needed... Between your posts, Autodesk University, and a select others, a new life has been sparked in my reviteering. I cannot wait to finish up this semester (tomorrow!!) and begin posting and fooling around in Revit again..

Instead of reposting Zach's great article I will just post a nice teaser picture and let you all explore Buildz:

Revit Tutorial - Adjusting a Camera View Scale (Revit Clinic)

Very useful tip over at Revit Clinic:

While a perspective view cannot be assigned to a set view scale (ie 1/4" = 1'-0"), you can adjust the size of the view to make it larger or smaller.

For example, let's say you have this simple camera view set up and placed on your sheet. You want the view itself to be larger, without changing what is shown/cropped:

To change the scale of the view, select the crop boundary and go to Modify
Cameras > Size Crop:

Day 3 Ends and the Final Day concludes...

Day three of Autodesk University 2010 was packed with events for myself. The day started with a couple Revit Programming class and ended with a class called "Fuzzy Math Essentials for Revit Family Builders"... if you thought my calculus project from a year back was loaded with funky math you have not seen anything yet...

I met a lot of great people yesterday as well. During the Fuzzy math class I ran into Steve Stafford of Revit OpEd and the class was given by Jason Grant (link)... Later on in the day, as I was attempting to do the first stitch of homework (ironically in the Manufacturing Lounge), I finally ran into Greg from Revit3d.com. As I expected, it was quite a meeting. The conversation began when we noticed the man sitting next to us was from a community college in Oregon (or somewhere out west). The three of us spoke about implementing BIM and Revit in his program at the college... Coming from a community college myself, I think it is great to see his interest and passion for doing the right thing. I would also like to say hello to his students (Oregon Community College I believe). Hopefully, he will email me with his progress.

So, the night went on. Greg decided him and I should make rounds in the exhibit hall... And, boy did we make rounds. I know I link a lot to Greg's blog and he links to me... But, after seeing him in action last night I have a whole new perspective on what he does and his passion. If you saw and heard what I did last night you would go on his blog everyday and tell the whole world. Greg, thanks for letting me tag along and partake in the great conversations.

I also decided to take advantage of the free Revit certification tests. I passed both the associate and professional Revit certification. I don't want to toot my own horn but I think I might have broken some type of time record. I finished the associate (30 questions) in roughly 15 minutes. I also finished the professional exam in 24 minutes. Is this fast? I wish the was a benchmark somewhere.

Finally, I am proud to say I met Carl Bass... Without going on and on about him I will say one thing... He is very tall. Also, I managed to run into Uncle Phil (Phil Bernstien) at Starbucks this morning...

Tomorrow, I head back hoe and must finish three design projects, a steel project, and study for a final... Vegas, I will miss you.

AU 2010: Day 2 Ends and Day 3 Begins...

Yesterday was the first day of full classes here at Autodesk University. What an experience this has been. I took a great class on conceptual modeling by David Fano of Design Reform.net followed by a few classes on Revit programming and API. Already, I have learned an incredible amount of stuff. Additionally, last night I was fortunate enough to attend the Autodesk Education mixer. The mixer was at the very top of THE Hotel and loaded with great people. I met some of the Autodesk Student experts and I probably had a tad bit too much to drink with one of them (Jeremy!). After the mixer I walked through the exhibit hall. I cannot wait to post about some of the great new technologies out there....(little hint: one of them could be a solution to all your rendering time problems). Keep watch for the posts!

Today starts with some more Revit programming classes, a sketchbook pro class, and some advanced family creation classes. Hopefully I will meet up with Greg from Revit3d.com today too... (we seem to keep missing each other).

Finally, another little tip if you plan on coming to AU next year... Don't expect to get any homework or work done here... It is very difficult.
