The Revit Kid.com Challenge - Avatech Revit Utilities 2011 Giveaway!

The Revit Kid.com is proud to be given the opportunity of holding a little competition/challenge in which the winner will receive a FREE copy of Avatech's Utilities for Revit 2011.  I have been using Avatech's utilities for a long time and love them.  Right now, they are $99 and will be going up significantly after August 1st so this is a very great opportunity.

The Challenge:

This challenge is a very simple one and will require you to really think about the BIM process.  In the comment portion of this post write a little essay, blurb, whatever... of how these Revit Utilities will improve your workflow.  Wether you are a student, professional, contractor, architect, etc...

I am really looking for details on how YOU use Revit.  Your workflow, your process, your thoughts, problems... Etc...

I think this will be an excellent opportunity for other readers and myself to see how their peers are using Revit so it is important to use great detail (maybe even the Revit Classroom Workflow will help with your students ;)  ).

On Thursday, July 30th, 2010 I will be asking my readers to vote on the comment they liked the most or the reader they feel deserves this great offer.  To vote, simply click the little "thumbs up" icon to the right of the persons comment.  Voting can be done before July 30th as well...  Any votes after midnight on July 30th will not be counted.  If there is a tie I will randomly draw the winner.

So start thinking and commenting away!  Don't forget to add your email address in the post or in the entry box when you comment.

The Prize:

  • 1st Place: Free Avatech Utilities for Revit 2011
  • 2nd Place: Free Avatech Utilities for Revit 2011 (Thanks to Revit OpEd)

*** Oh, and nothing is off the table as far as how you submit.  Links to videos, images, etc... are all acceptable ***

Entering the world of Revit with Avatech...
I fly through Google Earth in my Earth Connector, GridSelect picks up an interesting building, so I come in to land. I find the entrance but the door is locked, so I use my Door Mark Update door to hack it open. The room is too big and the echo of my footsteps scares me, so I use my Change Case tool to make it smaller. Now I like the room so I make a copy of it using Room Phase Copy and Room Renumber changes the name of it in my Content Browser. Hitting the Space Update button I transport to the other room only to find that not all of the parameters and elements have come across. Parameter Copy and Element Renumber sorts that out. After finding the toilet using my MEP Parameter Tool I do the business, exit the building and jump back in my Earth Connector.

Zooooooooom!
Below is a conversation heard on my side of a typical phone call from a client ... this is when Avatech's Utilities for Revit 2011 would come in handy!

"Hello, Mr. Client, how are you doing? I'm doing great too, thanks for asking. Did you get the drawings I sent you to review? And now you have a few comments. Let's heard them. Ok, you want to relabel all the rooms to meet your standards to same crazy number/letter combo and expect the doors to match. We can do that!

All the upper case gives you headache and you want it changed to lower case?! No biggie. In Canada, you don't call that level the first floor and want all the sections to reflect this change? I can make that happen!

You expect it all updated by this afternoon? I'm pretty sure we can make that happen. Have a nice day too!"

PLLLEEEEAAAASE folks-- if you can't beat 'em, join 'em! I don't see my clients changing anytime soon, so I might as well try some new software to make our lives easier! Thanks!
My comment is too long that I have to split them into 2 parts:

(Part 1 of 2)

My typical workflow is this: (BIM process during the pre-con phase on a design-build project.)

At the beginning I use what I call the (2d BIM coordination), usually team members are not ready to do everything in 3d except the fire sprinkler guys because their 2d is equal to their 3d work. I use the revit to generate the 2d floor plans, grid, room labels, furniture layout, etc. I overlay every single 2d floor plan layout from each trade in photoshop because of the graphic effect it can product to make the drawings more standout instead of just a typical black and white floor plan. This is one area I wish Revit can improve on. The ability to import the dwg file from each trade and easily to manipulate the color, shadows, strokes, grow features. I have good experience when we pass around these 2d coordination drawing for submittal review from everybody. It helps everybody to understand the layout easily and less confusion.
(Part 2 of 2)

3d BIM coordination
I export the Revit model directly to Navisworks via the plug-in in Revit. The 3d clash detection in Navisworks works so great that there's no way the clash detection in Revit could match. DPR, the contractor firm develop a tool called "slice tool" which is very useful to cut the area you want to focus on. That's something I wish Revit can implement down the road. Other thing I wish to have if there's a tool to audit the Revit model, stuff like checking if there are any duplicate walls. It's very important to have the "clean" model to do the quantity takeoff. I still haven't found a way to ensure the quantity takeoff is accurate yet.
We use Revit MEP here and the MEP Parameter Tool will save us a ton of time, this is something that we quite often have to go through and do manually, as a lot of the parameters can't be specified ahead of time. Parameter Copy will have a similar benefit for us as well. Change Case will be extremely beneficial, as our standard is ALWAYS upper case, but Revit defaults to Tile Case in a lot of instances. The Revit Content Browser will also save a ton of time, as with Revit MEP we end up needing to download about 95% of our content. The Space Update will aid us in keeping everything better coordinated and up to date. Most of the other tools will have some use, but not as much at present for us.
Using RAC2011 created a custom Titleblock.rfa file using out of the box as well as custom labels with shared parameters. The problem is that the labels (Project Name, Project Location) are editable on the individual sheets which can be a major concern for user error. Is there a way to lock these project information so they can only be edited from the rfa file and not the individual sheets.

Also once a sheet has been edited individually and the project information is changed by mistake, is there a way to reload the family and shared parameters to restore the original label information
