Revit Tutorial Series - Family Creation - Part 1

Finally!!! I know... Finally, The Revit Kid has made a new video... I would like to deeply apalogize for the lack of original videos.  I have been super busy with tons of new and old things going on in my life.  I am still quite busy but I should have a few spare minutes to create some videos for you guys.

This is the first of a series of Family Creation Tutorials I will be doing.  I originally starting writing out exactly what topics, families, and steps I would take in the video but decided that would not be realistic.  A realistic model of instruciton would include me messing up, improvising the steps of creation as I would in a real world work situation, and ultimately problem solving to create a high quality family.

One of my biggest pet peeves of the advent of Revit picking up traction is the lack of good families.  The great thing about Revit is the ability to share these high quality models from manufactures or costum built designers.  I garuntee you that more than half of the models you grab from RevitCity and even Autodek's very own SEEK are garbage.  Some are simply 3D masses imported from CAD and Max while other throw error and crash your machine when you try to change a dimension.  With this series I hope to put an end to crappy families and start a revolution of good quality, parametric, and useful family creators... Enjoy..

Revit Tutorial Series - Family Creation - Part 1

Topics Covered:
  • Starting a Revit Family Project
  • Understanding Reference Planes
  • Using dimensions as constraints and parameters.
  • Manipulating Reference Planes.
  • Manipulating Geometry using dimensions, reference planes, and parameters.

Jeff...Again ...you Rock!!!...Like Zoro when he returned back!__Keep going__
Mate, great job on the video, helped me out a heap!
Very Helpful Thank you!!!
Nice. Thanks for the family video!
Hi, It really Rocks..!!! Thanx.....Anyways, I think you CAN see reference planes in "generic model family", you said that you would be have to in massing family to see them in 3D. All you have to do is name them, set one of them and click SHOW button...(I think you forgot to do that, too in your video)
DarkConn - Thanks for the comment. I know about using the "show reference plane" command and naming the reference plane but what I was talking about it is in the conceptual massing environment how you are able to see ALL of the levels, reference planes, etc... simultaneously in one 3D view.
Right...!!!!
How do you create an arched door opening in a curved wall?
Ehi guy, great job!
thanks
c
I am having troubles viewing the tutorial videos! help will be appreciated.
Thanks Revit Kid. A great starter. I created a u-shaped counter with backsplash family last night...wished I had seen this video before hand. I might have had an easier time and more useful family... I'll try it again.
I feels like... I need to become an ADDICT with this REVIT THING!! I hope i could install a Revit 2010 in my laptop... thanks Revit Kid!
I have to say a big thank you for posting these videos. Under a strange situation I find myself having to learn Revit REALLY FAST to finish a project in the next 10 days; the generic Revit tutorials SUCK, and I'm not finding the AU stuff much better, but your basic explanations are so good. I'm looking forward to watching all of your family creation videos... in a marathon... tonight... Wish me luck. :-)
Awesome I will be donating for this awesome cause
Thanks so much!
Hi Jeff ...
Thanks alot for the tutorial .... but I have a problem here , I tried to ran it for the second time and it did not work ......
Thank you for posting the tutorial ...It seems basic enough that I went ahead and created the cube. After testing the parameters to ensure that they work correctly and adding the extrusion, which I locked to the reference planes, I went into the 3D view. The blue grips arrows when selected gave me an error when I dragged them, saying constraints not satisfied. Any comments on how to resolve this issue?

I have a similar problem with the height constraint, I cannot move manually no matter whatever I do. It says constraints not satisfied so I had to type in height change every time

That was very very helpful. Looking for Making complex or importing complex geometries as families and adding constraints to them

Hey can anybody help me with creating sliding doors family......
Urgent
Hi, I'm brand new at Revit and trying to teach myself.
althought I have been using Autocad for 15 years.
In Autocad you have (1) extension (.dwg) so organizing files is easy.
In Revit you have (3) extensions and it's very confusing where I should save and save-as location.
Has anybody come up with a file organization they may share with me or refer me to a site that explains this step by step.
Thanks
super helpful
