Padding the Floor: When to Use Building Pads and When to Use Floors?!

As a result of Luke's post and a discussion I recently had with a colleague I find myself pondering...  What is the correct method of utilizing a building pad and a concrete floor slab?

There seem to be two typicality methods of using floor slabs and building pads:

  • Using a floor and overlapping the building pad.  Typically shutting off the building pad when it can be seen.
  • Using only a building pad (set to the same properties as your floor would be) as the floor slab.
What is your method?  Let's discuss.  Comment below.

Option 3 for me.

I use pads modelled as a site prep layer, one that would typically occupy the space immediately beneath a slab (hardcore, sand blinding, insulation, air, etc) - then model the slab as a slab.

I host both on their respective levels (no instance offsets relating to one level as I much prefer to use a "LEVELS" working section view for dimension-control/locks)

- then there's no graphical overlap (or physical clash) and you retain the (individual) control of build ups and sketched-footprints.

PS : Why, having logged in, does this still have me fill in the info below?

That is another method! Good idea!

I am not sure why it is asking you for more information if you log in... I will look into that. I know, for me, sometimes the log in can be funny as well.

I've been getting our crew at the office to go similar to Kieren. We've been using pads for a long time "under" the floor slab. We create them as 6" gravel that then appears in all of our sections etc and only have to edit the ends @ footings to make all sections correct. it is pretty easy to take you floor slab into sketch mode, copy sketch lines and then create new pad as a paste in its sketch mode....goodluck!
I would be reluctant to use a pad for a floor. Might use them for external paved areas as a quick workaround. View controls, scheduling ... better if floors are floors. Also we normally don't go to the trouble of creating pads if the toposurface lies within the thickness of the floor structure, which in our case it often does. In cases where we do have a pad under the floor then I pretty much endorse the previous two comments.
Option 1, making the Building Pads with 0 thickness.
