Soft Shadow Techniques - Tip

HOK posted a great tutorial following Zach's post about soft rendering. This techniquw is explained by HOK:

What this actually does, is turns off the sun (as its night time ), but keeps the sky image map and the low level ambient lighting. As noted by Zach, to achieve the best results, it's worth setting your render quality to "best" to get the best shadow depth you can. Setting your render to "best" will obviously result in long render times, so it's probably worth doing a few low resolution renders in the first instance to be assured that the settings will work for you.

I would advise getting comfortable with the custom quality settings instead of just relying on the 'best' setting. You can significantly reduce your rendering times. For instance, if there isn't anything important behind translucent materials, you can turn down that particular quality or reduce the number of passes that light rays make through there. Most of the time, I can cut 50-70% off of the time it takes for a 'best' rendering by adjusting the quality settings that are needed for a particular image.
Thats a great tip. I have used the custom quality setting, but only to turn certain setting UP. It never even crossed my mind to turn un-needed settings down. Has anyone else experiments with this? I will have to run a few tests and post about it. Thanks for the tip!
