Adding a Detail Item in a Wall Sweep in Revit?!

Here is a great little tip on how to embed detail component items within your profile families in Revit.  For example, if you had a metal coping profile that was a wall sweep and you wanted to see 2x6 blocking when you cut a section (but don' need to model it) then this is a great solution for you!

This tutorial was inspired by a question from Emil, a member of the BIM After Dark Community.  Thanks for the inspiration, Emil!

Revit Tutorial - Constant Slope Rigging Family (Rigid Insulation)

We've all seen the wall section before.  A flat roof with rigid insulation that is sloping towards a roof drain.  I would venture to say everyone reading this post has drawn or modeled the above detail at some point in their lives.  I would also venture to say many of you are drafting the rigid insulation as a filled region EVERY time you draw this section.

The following tutorial (extracting directly from BIM After Dark - Volume 3, set to re-release in a couple of weeks) illustrates how simple it is to make a parametric detail component for this typical condition... Continue reading to view the tutorial...

Entire Revit 2015 Detail Component Library - The Visual Guide

This is pretty cool!  Lawrence, over at the Autodesk Revit Structure blog published a 30 page PDF that illustrate every detail component in Revit.  The guide is structured similar to the divisions and folder layouts as the default Autodesk Detail library.  If you use detail components (and I am sure you do) then this PDF will definitely interest you.

Tutorial - Creating Detail Components from Detail Lines (Revit Clinic)

From the Revit Clinic...

Creating new detail components from existing detail lines & components

By default you can copy detail lines from a project drafting view into a detail component family. You cannot however copy a detail component from a project drafting view into a detail component family.

There may be a scenario where you have a number of detail lines, and components organized in a drafting view. What if you want to move this content all into a new detail component family for standard details?

I’ve included 3 options below depending on the complexity of the drafting view or desired detail component:

1. Edit the detail component family from the project drafting view, and then copy & paste the detail lines [in the family] from the detail component family into the project drafting view. When complete you could then copy all of the detail items from the project drafting view into a new detail component family.

To Model, or Not to Model?

I handed in a project I did in Revit for a Structures class and received a few questions about it. Using this project as an example I would like to address one question I was asked by a few people:

"How did you model every single CMU block and the bond beam?!"

Well the answer is simple... I didn't. Click the link below to view the tip/tutorial.
