Dynamo for Revit 2023 ... with John P!

On this episode of BIM After Dark Live I was joined by John Pierson of Parallax Team to talk about all of the new features to Dynamo for Revit 2023!

By now, you've probably seen plenty of "What's New in Revit 2023" videos and posts... John and I decided to focus our discussion specifically on Dynamo because it also received some HUGE updates in the latest Revit 2023 release....

Oh, and he made a skeleton dance... :)

What is Dynamo?

Yesterday, I asked those of you on my email list a simple question: “Why have you not learned Dynamo yet?”
I was not surprised by many of the responses. As I expected, many of you stated that you either did not have the time to learn something new or that you did not know where to begin.

But, there were some responses that I did not expect.

I assumed everyone heard of Dynamo... Which seemed to be true enough. I also assumed that everyone knew what Dynamo was.

Well, you know what they say when you assume things...Turns out quite a few of you weren't really sure of what Dynamo actually is.

The conversations I had with you all led me to make the following video. In it, I answer the simple question, "What is Dynamo?".

Save the Date - First Ever "DIY Dynamo Day"

I can't believe it has taken me over ten years to finally do this...

For the first time ever, I will be holding an exclusive, in-person, training day.

"DIY Dynamo Day" will be held on January 24th, 2020, in Hartford, Connecticut.

I created DIY Dynamo two years ago. Over 200 students have graduated and started their Dynamo journeys! In speaking with previous and current students they all said they found so much value in my online office hours (included in DIY Dynamo) and wished I would host an in-person training session based on the DIY Dynamo curriculum. After a lot of research, planning, and contemplation I have decided to finally do it!

DIY Dynamo - Spring 2019 Opening Soon...

Over the last couple of weeks I have received quite a few emails asking about when the next enrollment of DIY Dynamo would be.  Due to the demand, I'm going to put the Residential Revit series on hold for a week or two and we will have the DIY Dynamo Spring 2019 Enrollment next week!

Make sure you sign-up for the DIY Dynamo mailing list to get information on how to enroll and enrollment week discounts, content, etc...

"The Revit Dad" + FREE Dynamo Workshop

Over the last nine years, I’ve always made it a point to not only share Revit tips and tricks with you but to also share things about my personal life. For example, I shared when I became a licensed architect and when I got married.

Why do I share my personal life with you?

First, so you get a chance to know the person behind the “avatar” that is “The Revit Kid”. Second, because the events that take place in my personal life help give context to the content I create here on the blog.

For example, when I made the tough decision to leave my full-time job at a large architecture firm and took on a role at a construction management firm it was not a surprise that some of my content had a construction focus.

So You Want to Learn Dynamo but You Don’t Know Where to Begin?

I’ll go out on a limb here and assume you have heard of Dynamo by now. Additionally, you’re probably familiar with what Dynamo is and how it is rapidly changing the way we use Revit.

If not, I touch on what Dynamo is here and check out the first chapter of the Dynamo Primer here.

Assuming you have heard of Dynamo and you know what it is, I'll bet you have been saying to yourself, "maybe I should learn how to use this Dynamo thing?".

Then, your immediate next question is "but, how and where do I begin?".

Continue reading if you have been pondering where and how to begin learning this Dynamo thing...

The Dynamo Desktop Cheat Sheet - Free Download!

Although the temperature has remained in the high 80's here, summer has officially ended.  That means the Dynamo Days of Summer are coming to a close.  Usually, I would be very sad this time of the year with cold and snowy weather approaching.  But, this year, I am excited!

Why? You ask.

Because my latest course, "DIY Dynamo - A Beginner's Course on Dynamo for Revit", will open enrollment soon!

Why else?

Because I am excited to share my latest free download with you all!

3D Printing Topography Directly from Revit ... Plus, Exciting News!

Due to the overwhelming interest, engagement, and discussions created over my last post documenting the process of 3D printing directly from Revit I figured this post is a perfect follow-up. Interesting discussions on Twitter and through emails led me to explore the concept of automating the process documented in last weeks post using Dynamo.  I have made progress with "massing" the building using Dynamo but it's not quite ready to share...  Instead, I will share something just as cool!

While exploring using Dynamo to "mass" a building for 3D printing I realized a similar script could be used to 3D print topography.  For those of you who may not have attempted printing topography I'll let you in on a little secret: it doesn't work.  Topography exports as a single surface and not a solid.  Therefore, you need to use the process I mentioned last week to mass out the topography... Imagine trying to model topography using conceptual massing... not fun!

Thanks to our good friend Dynamo (and some awesome users in the Dynamo forum), printing Revit Topography can be as easy as clicking "run"... Keeping reading to see the script and how it works...

*** P.S. - I have some exciting updates about the blog at the end of this post... so definitely read until the end!

Dynamo Tutorial - Rotate Multiple Elements on Their Own Axis

A reader (sorry, I lost your email and name!) emailed in and asked about rotating a series of elements by something other than 90 degrees.  She referenced an OLD post I published (circa 2011) about selecting columns and rotating them all 90 degrees using the space bar.   This was an interesting little task to think about.  When you select more than one element and use the "rotate" command they rotate about one axis:

After attempting to place some reference planes and use the space bar method without success I decided to fire up Dynamo... Here is the simple script...
