Modern Kitchen Renovation Series - More Design Options (Episode 15)

In episode 15 of our modern kitchen renovation series we will do more with design options in Revit.   In episode 9, we used design options in Revit to explore "conceptual" layouts, in this episode we will use them to set up to distinct design ideas that will be presented to the client.  The option sets include walls, windows, casework, etc... So, it should be a nice little lesson for all those who are wondering about design options in the real-world!

Modern Kitchen Renovation Series - "Test Fit" my Design with Revit and Enscape (Episode 8)

In episode 8 of our modern kitchen renovation series we will start laying out our kitchen design using the generic line-based cabinet family in Revit and Enscape. Essentially, we will "test fit" our design schemes with Revit and Enscape while still going back to hand drawings in between.  Oh, I will also show you my Enscape settings for this phase of design that help you feel the space without as much distraction!

Modern Kitchen Renovation Series - Phasing in Revit (Episode 7)

In episode 7 of our Modern Kitchen Renovation Series we are going to talk a bit about Phasing in Revit.  Through this tutorial, I will walk through the concept of phasing in Revit, show you how I set up and created demolition plans  and views for the kitchen, and give an overview of the graphic settings I use for my demolition views and plans.

Revit Tip - Show Wall Construction Lines for Existing Walls

In Revit, by default, an existing wall that is visible in a New Construction view will show as a solid white fill in your floor plans.  But, what if you want to see the lines indicated the wall construction layers of an existing wall that remains?  Well, you have to simply override (or "un-override" depending on the setting) a few of the Graphic settings under "Phase Filters".

  1. Click the "Manage Tab"
  2. Click the Phases Button:
  3. Go to the "Graphic Overrides" Tab.
  4. First, change the "Cut Patterns" column.  Check the box that says "Visible" and change the color to whatever color you want the patterns to be. (Note: If you do not want to see any of the Existing wall cut patterns while in the New Construction view then set this to White). It should look like this:
  5. Then, back in the Graphic Overrides tab, click on the Materials columns where it currently says "Phase- Existing".
  6. In the Material Dialogue, click the Button for "No Material" (Shown Below).

    Click Apply, and you're done!

Now, you should see all of your wall layers in your New Construction views....

Revit Tip - Phasing - Demo Existing and New Room Names

I posted a few days ago about some frustrations I was having with the Rooms and phasing of Revit.  Well, turns out a simple change of my thought process on Phasing helped out a lot... Thanks to a comment by a reader named Marty M!

First, we must remember that Room's exist on the phase they were placed on.  That is to say, whatever phase your view is set to when you place a room, that is the room's phase.

Second, your project should have a minimum three phases (as opposed to the Autodesk template of only two): Existing, Demolition, and New Construction. I say minimum because this is all based on the project.  You may have more than three.  ***EDIT*** DEMO IS NOT A PHASE!!

Build your existing building and add all the room names in the Existing Phase.

Now that you have all three phases set up and views for each phase.  Everything that you demolish should be demolished on the "Demolition" Phase... Not the "New Construction" Phase.  This is where my mind set had to change a bit.  I had always set the "Phase Demolished" to "New Construction" and I think it was due to the Revit Template only started with two phases. **Note**  When using the Demolition "Hammer" from the tool bar make sure you are in the Demolition phase view.  The hammer sets the elements demo phase to whatever view you are in. ***

Finally, in your Demo floor plans... Set the phase to "Demolition" and set the phase filter to "Show Previous + Demo"...  Go back to your Existing floor plan with the room names and select all the Rooms... (Not the Room Names... you want to select the blue squares).  Copy to your clipboard, and paste the Rooms into your demolition view.

Tah dah!  Now you have your Existing Room names in your Demo views...

Of course, the one caveat is that you are managing two sets of Existing Rooms.
