Not this...

Am I just dreaming??

Cloud Rendering... Use your 25!

I got very excited when this email came in....

The trial you are currently using was made available—for a limited period of time—as a token of appreciation to those who tested Project Neon on Autodesk Labs. This exclusive trial ends December 31, 2011. However, because we are so pleased with the feedback we continue to receive from users like you, Autodesk has decided to offer a new trial! The new trial -- which will be open to anyone beginning January 3, 2012 -- offers 15 cloud units at no cost.*

Sweet!  15 more free cloud renderings to use!!!  .... But wait... there is more...

On January 3, the number of cloud units available to you will re-set to 15. Any unused cloud units from your previous trial will expire and will no longer be available.
WTF?? So if I still have 20 cloud renderings left I will lose 5 of them come January 3rd?  You're kidding right?  All this time I thought my 20 cloud renderings I have been saving for next semester would spike up to 35!

Damn.... This better mean  a new, less exclusive, version of The Cloud Rendering Service will be coming out soon...

Tell Autodesk how you feel about this...

Revit Tip - Duplicate WITH Dependent

This is a simple little tip.  If you want to duplicate a floor plan and its dependent views follow these steps:

  1. Find the main view you want to copy and Duplicate (I used Duplicate with Details because I wanted the room names copied over.)
  2. While you have the new view as your Active view (you can tell because the new view will be in BOLD letters in the Project Browser), right click on the original view. Then click on "Apply Dependent Views". It will ask you if you want to apply the dependent views to the new view that you just renamed. Click on Yes.
  3. Rename views as needed.

Sadly, this cannot be done between Floor Plan and Reflected Ceiling Plans due to the inability to mess with System Families in Revit... Would be awesome to be able to duplicate and then convert a floor plan to a reflected ceiling plan...

The Revit Kid on Twitter

I have had a Twitter account for quite some time but have not been using it the way I should...  As in, I have not followed a single person or "tweeted" beyond the blog "feed"... Well, that is going to change.  I am now following people and responding/tweeting BEYOND the blog.

So please, feel free to follow me and tweet me!!

ARSights - Augmented Reality Update

I posted a while ago about this new technology and it just keeps getting better.  I had messed around with the demo way back when and it is very cool. I need to invest in a detached webcam and really start to explore it.

I really wish they had a more direct relationship to Revit but through a series of export/import drills you can get a Revit model in it for sure.  I will do a write up about how to do that in a later post.  For now, enjoy the future... All I keep thinking about is using this in school and handing a little piece of paper to the jurors and then asking them to just look at the screen:

Revit Blogs via Revit Op Ed - What Sites to Follow?

People always ask me what Revit / BIM blogs and website I follow.  If you check out my Blogger profile you can see the specific blogs and sites I follow...

Steve, over at Revit Op Ed, has an excellent list of Revit and BIM websites... By excellent I mean more than you can even read in one day...

Click here to see Steve's list of Revit and BIM websites....

(P.S. - He marked this blog as a "Must Follow" ... Thanks Steve!).

(P.P.S.  For some reason Greg's blog (Revit3D.com) is not on that list... You should definitely follow it!)

Free Revit People and Tree Detail Components

Luke re-posted a link to some... interesting... families.  They are detail components uploaded by Art Archtiecture...  The blog is in Russion but Google will translate it pretty well.  The families are actually kind of cool and can add some interest to your elevations or sections...  Like this:

Where Do I Get More Revit Content ( Families ) ?

Lately, it seems like a question I am asked about once a day....  "Where do I get this chair?", "Where do I get this table?"...

Well, **edit** Jame's put together a nice list of some typical resources for downloading Revit Content:

BIM Content for Revit

This post contains a listing of known websites hosting content for Revit. We’ll try to keep this post updated as sites change or new ones are created. This information was partially compiled from Mario Guttman’s AU 2011 class “Revit Family Counseling” (visit Mario’s own site whitefeet.com for custom Revit tools).

Manufacturer’s Content

Autodesk Seek – content aggregated by Autodesk; contains default Revit families as well as manufacturer-specific content, low to moderate quality control; content in a variety of formats, search can filter for specific formats; free, no registration required.

ARCAT – generic and manufacturer-specific content; modeled by ARCAT, high quality control; free, no registration required.
bimstore – manufacturer-specific content; modeled by bimstore, high quality control; free, registration required for downloading content.

I would also like to add this link that has content I have used before:

Can you think of some that aren't listed here or on Phil's blog?  Comment below!!
