The Revit Kid.com! Challenge No.3 - 3Form Alta Shape

I have to model these in work and as I begin to dive into making them I thought it would be fun to have you, my readers, give it a shot.  The shapes will be ceiling hung but I think it would be best as a faced based family.

There is only one rule... The family has to be made COMPLETELY in Revit.

3 Form Shapes - Alta:
Alta* shapes ceiling feature with three small panels
• (3) Small shapes: 24" × 45", 42" × 45", 43" × 42"
• Varia Ecoresin C3, 1/4" gauge
• Ceiling-mounted Alta shapes create unique canopy effect
• Each shape requires (3) supports (can be shared)
• Holes drilled
• Smaller scale for more intimate spaces
• 3 week lead time

More information here...

Of course, you are welcome to do more research on your own.

Prize: The winner of this challenge will be awarded TWO free licenses of SAuBIM - Code Calculation in Revit v1.0.

See the previous two challenges here...

Email Revit Family Files to:  Jeff@TheRevitKid.com

Deadline:  Sunday January 15 th, 2012 at 10:00 PM ET.

Revit Kid Challenge 2 Winner!

The winner of my Revit Kid Challenge 2 is Jay Clancy! Although his model was not exactly what I had in mind it did the trick. His model will help you all see different ideas of how people attack ma family. Check out the video below for more information...

"Hi Jeff,

This gave me a real headache!

I tried different sweeps & extrusions and made many mistakes along the way until finally putting together something that just about works…

I used ref lines to create extrusions and voids controlled by a ref plane skeleton, so that (within kind reason!) the building shapes are parametric for width & height & offset from the ground. It does start to come apart if you offset the 2 main building areas away from each other, and I know it isn’t 100% the correct shape… But I have learnt a lot about working with the new conceptual environment and am fairly happy with the end result. (Although the ‘Depth’ parameter won’t work due to the way I created some parts early on)..."

Thanks for all of you who participated. When you see this post, Jay, shoot me an email with your address and shirt size! Congratulations!

The Revit Kid Challenge 2!

Due to the great response of the first Revit Kid Challenge I decided to do one more. I received this email from a reader:

"Hey Jeff,

Hope your well. I'm just about to start second year of Architecture school I thought learning a BIM package would be highly beneficial. While reading about which is the elitist of the BIM packages, I came across your blog, so I decided to go with Revit.

I have been doing the built in Revit Tutorials for a few weeks now. I have a question for you and was hoping you could explain how I could create these curved walls - see image."

There you have it... your challenge. Send me an email at: Jeff@TheRevitKid.com with your procedure, ideas, images, etc... of how YOU would get this done. I have some ideas in my head but I would love to see what my readers come up with. Remember: Take advantage of the program... a simple un-parametric extrusion is not a great solution.

Thanks to Kai for the email!

The Revit Kid - Rendering Challenge.

This week may be a little slow in the blog postings due to me having to move into my new apartment on Saturday. I will still post as much as possible and inform you all with articles, tutorials, and references.

I thought it would be fun to have my readers do what I do everyday for this blog. Solve Revit problems that are emailed to me. Here is the email from Oswald:

"Hi there revitkid!

Nice blogsite BTW, it really helped me on way in and way out on revit. I just wanna ask how to render an aerial view of a floor plan (so that i can show an overview of the floor finishing materials) using interior artificial lighting only. I tried to hide the ceilings and light components (so that they dont block the view when rendering) but it seems it also hides the light that is coming from the light source. Any ideas? thanks in advance!

More power on your site!"

I immediately have some ideas of how to investigate this problem but no time to sit there and render/examine the problem this week. Email me with your solution and the best one will win a free Lock Noob Revit shirt!

When learning any program it is essential that you problem solve like this. This is one of the many reasons why I love doing this blog. I don't know EVERYTHING about Revit and maybe never will but everytime I get a question that boggles my mind it is just another learning experience and pushes my Revit skills that much further. That isltimately how I learned Revit... Sat there for hours figuring out problems that would arise.

Email me at Jeff@TheRevitKid.com with you solution and images/videos. Good Luck!
