Digital BILT Week (formally known as BILTNA, and RTCNA) is a conference that is near and dear to my heart.  I have been attending and speaking at this conference since 2012.

Power BI for Construction Visualization (DBEI Webinar)

 

There has been a lot of interest in Power BI throughout the AEC industry.  In fact, I have received a bunch of feedback from Episode 18 of BIM After Dark live looking for a follow up... Well, I still plan on digging deeper with more episodes, but if you can't wait, you're in luck!

I am finally over my jet lag and getting back in to the grove of things after returning from BILT NA 2019 in Seattle.  I wanted to put together a couple of the key topics I took away from the conference this year...

Having a 7 month old child has made it difficult to travel this year.  In fact, I told myself I would only attend one conference this year and I am sticking to it.  It's been no secret over the years that my favorite conference by far is BILT NA (formally Revit Technology Conference).

If you have been following me for a while it should be no surprise that I chose to attend BILT NA in Seattle... Will you be attending as well?  If so, be sure to say hello!

I am also honored to have been chosen to speak again at the conference.  So, if you are having trouble choosing your sessions I'll help you choose at least one slot.  I will be talking about Assemble System's (a program I haven't gotten into too much detail about on the blog, but a program you should all be aware of because it will change the way you "do BIM").

BILT North America is this week!

I am pretty excited to be heading to another BILT conference (formerly known as RTCNA).  I love looking back on my previous review posts from this conference...  They remind me about how valuable and impact each year has been for me.

Every year I come home with a sense of vigor and excitement.  Additionally, my mind is usually spinning around all of the ways I can use the new tips, tricks, and topics discussed that week.

BILT NA 2018 - See You There?!

It's that time of the year again!  Time to plan your trip to BILT NA (formally known as RTCNA).  This year BILT NA is in St. Louis from August 9th to 11th.

I have talked about how valuable I find this conference every year on the blog...  So, do yourself a favor and show all of these posts to your boss and tell him or her you want to go!

It is hard to imagine where many of the new visualization technologies will be used within a construction company. Truth is, at Turner Construction we are using tools like Autodesk Revit, Lumion, Enscape3D, Photoshop, In-Design, HTC Vive (virtual reality hardware), and 3D Printers everyday as part of our construction process.

Building Content Summit 2017 - Are You Going?

Due to scheduling conflicts I will not be attending BILT North America (formally RTCNA) this year... I know, I am sad too...

But!  I will be attending/speaking at the Building Content Summit for the first time this year!

As sad as I am to not be attending RTCNA (crap, I mean, BILT NA), I am excited to attend a focused two day conference about the state of content in Building Information Modeling.  While developing my presentation I realized how many opinions I actually have on building content.  I can only imagine the other 70-100 attendees feel the same!

Similar to last year's session at RTCNA (now, BILT NA), I will be discussing how contractors use models but with an emphasis on content's (Revit Families, etc...) impact on downstream use of the model (pre-construction, construction, operations, and so on...)

5 Days ON the Sun: #RTCNA Recap

"It's a dry heat", they say... I don't care what they say... 120 degrees feels HOT with or without humidity. 

Two weeks ago I attended my fifth Revit Technology Conference North America (RTCNA).  I can't believe it has already been five!  For a look at my recaps and posts from the last 4 years of RTCNA's click here... 

This year the conference was held in Scottsdale, Arizona at the Kierland Westin Resort and Spa. The venue was fantastic with lots of great amenities including a beautiful golf course.  In fact, my buddy Steve and I decided to get up early Saturday morning and play a round before the conference started....  After all, the hotel does a great job at supplying amazing views of the course everywhere you turn... It makes you want to play...

The Revit Kid Featured on BIM Thoughts Podcast

After a year or so of "Yeah, we have to do an episode together", Bill, Carla, and I got on a call and chatted a bit!  If you have not listened to the BIM Thoughts podcast yet, what are you waiting for?  Bill interviews all of the "Revit-Stars" you can think of on an array of different topics.   

I remember thinking about podcasting years ago and I told myself "You can't talk about BIM without video!"  Well, 40 episodes later, Bill has proven me wrong.  In fact, Marcello and Steve are also creating information packed podcasts of their own!

#RTCNA 2016 - Will You Be There?

It's that time of the year again!  Registration for Revit Technology Conference North America 2016 (RTCNA) is open!  Will you be attending?

I thought about going through the motions and telling you why you SHOULD attend RTCNA... Oh, and if you are attending make sure you sign up for my session (Session 2.5 on Friday at 5:15PM).  The session is titled "How are Contractors Using My Models?"... I plan on taking my experience at Turner Construction and sharing with attendees how your architectural and engineering models are used down stream... Using real-world examples and demonstrations, I plan on demystifying the scary abyss that architects call "handing over your model".

I attended my fourth North American Revit Technology Conference last week.  I don't want to make as bold a statement as declaring this years the best of the four but it sure as hell was a great event.  As I write this my mind is still in a blur and recovering from the brain overload last week.  I wanted to take the time and review some of my personal "Top Eight" topics or takeaways of the conference.

7 Things I Learned at #RTCNA 2014

1. Chicago has some serious thunderstorms.

Many of you may have seen the numerous tweets about cancelled flights, delays, and overall travel annoyances.  I, too, had to deal with some issue getting to the conference on Wednesday night.  Fortunately, thanks to perfect timing and the power of Twitter I hopped on a plane with a fellow RTCNA attendee and made it on time.  To quote Jay Zallan, "these are first world problems.."

2. Schaumburg is NOT Chicago

Similar to RTCNA 2012, RTCNA 2014 was marketed as being in the big city of Chicago but ended up being about 31 miles away.  Ultimately, the conference was a hit regardless of where it was located (the only time I would have had to get outside would have been late at night anyways).  I have always wanted to go to downtown Chicago... Maybe one day I will.

3. Revit is STILL gaining traction...

I have been blogging for over five years about Revit, BIM, and technology as it relates to architecture and construction.  Talking about Revit everyday, working with Revit everyday, and blogging about Revit everyday may have caused me to lose a bit of perspective.  I've assumed that Revit (and BIM in general) had become the new norm and had been accepted as the new norm.

I was wrong.  When I saw all of the new faces at this years RTCNA (apparently there was a very large percentage of first time attendees) they reminded me that BIM is still on the rise!  This was an encouraging thought that will motivate me moving forward with the blog and BIM After Dark.

Will you be at #RTCNA ?

I will be!  A week from today I will be boarding a flight to Chicago for this years Revit Technology Conference North American (#RTCNA).  I am extremely excited to be a speaker for two sessions this year.

In Session 8, I will be filling in for Tom de Plater.  Tom could not make the trip from the other side of the globe and asked me to fill-in.  His lecture is about the Unity Game Engine, Revit, and Oculus Rift VR goggles....  How could I say no?!

In Session 10, I will be introducing you to the world of 3DS Max/V-Ray.  Anyone who wants to make their Revit models looks like renderings on the cover of Architectural Record will enjoy the class.

If you are going to be at RTCNA and you see me, please say hello!  I go to this conference every year in hope of meeting more of my readers... and I always do!  So, don't be shy!  Also, shoot me and e-mail or Tweet if you want to meet up!  I may be giving out a few little gifts related to BIM After Dark...

Finally, make sure you follow me on twitter (@TheRevitKid) and the hashtag #RTCNA.  I will post on the blog as frequently as possible but Twitter is always the easiest method of reporting from the conference.  You will never see as much Revit talk on Twitter than you will during this conference.

4 Reasons You Should Attend RTC, #4 is My Favorite (#RTCNA)

I've officially registered for Revit Technology Conference North America 2014 (#RTCNA).  RTC is by far my favorite conference to attend.  If you have followed this blog over the years you would have seen numerous posts before and after the last few RTCNA's.  This year, I thought I would publish a post long before the event and give you my reasons why YOU should go. 

Revit Technology Conference 2013 - North America #RTCNA

In exactly one week I will be on a plane flying to Vancouver to attend the Revit Technology Conference 2013 - North America.  I am very excited to not only attend the lectures/classes but to meet some of you as well!  The one thing that I enjoyed about RTC last year was the intimacy.  By the end of three days you already begin recognizing faces and meeting more than half of the people there!

I am officially registered for RTC North America 2013!   Are you??  Unfortunately, due to school commitments I was unable to submit the abstracts I wanted to but I will still be there!!  Last year was an awesome time.  I met tons of people and learned lots of new things...
