Revit 2013 - New Features - A "Light" Review

Another installment of the "Light" Review...

I have been trying to get around to my own Revit 2013 posts but the current "all-nighters", physical models, photo-shopping, structural calculations, and working at the office have really been taking up too much time...

Oh well, you can always rely on David Light's review....  Steve also posted about some nice little features that snuck through...

Similar to last year, I will estimate the Student Release date of Revit 2013 at around April 18th...  Let's see if Autodesk can beat my estimate this year too!

Anyways... let me get back to my not sleeping and you can all enjoy the virtual cornucopia of information being released about Revit 2013.

Revit Tip - Dimension Tips and Tricks

I thought I would link a great little video from Steve about dimensioning...

Myself, having used CAD for many years before Revit, find the Revit dimensions to be an absolute delight.  From the strings, to leaders, to "entire walls", and etc...  Check out Steve's videos and

I also have had a few videos related to dimensions:

Revit Renderings and Photoshop

Time and time again I see renderings that have been completed in Revit and then simply printed... as is.  I see this in school as well as in the office.  Now, this blog is a testament to how much I love Revit and believe in the software.  But, I will be the first to admit that it takes a little bit extra to make GOOD renderings.  Sure, the new ambient and realist views are freaking awesome just as they are exporterd but I am talking about actual renderings.  I have some posts on this site about different post processing methods (mostly Photoshop) that help Revit renderings look like REAL renderings...  Something as simple as placing the Revit rendering on top of a real image of the site can completely change the look of it!

So please, learn some simple Photoshop skills and stop printing Renderings directly out of Revit!  Do it for yourself... if not, do it for me!

Revit Tip - Select All Mullions on Grid / Select all Panels

This is a little tip that I just now realized I have yet to post about!  It is very simple but will make your life much easier when changing curtain panels, mullions, grids, corners, etc...

It is very simple.
  • In any view, select the mullion or panel of your choice.
  • Right click.
  • There is an option for "Select Mullions" and "Select Panels" similar to the images below.

Try it out for yourself!  It is a life and time saver!

Quest 3D 5.0 - Real Time Visualization

Referring back to my posts about Real Time Rendering/Visualization software you can see how many competitors are hitting the market.  Well, here is another one!

Quest3D lets everyone create compelling 3D fly-throughs and interactive presentations.

Version 5 now offers an amazingly easy off the shelf visualization engine.
In minutes you can be up to speed with your project and quikly send an executable to your client.
"The holy grail is to combine an of-the-shelf product with the power of writing your own software.", says Remko Jacobs, CTO of Act-3D. "We bundled amazing real-time 3D rendering technology, solid importing and export to an executable in one convenient package."

"This is an exciting release for everyone.", continues Ferry Marcellis, CEO of Act-3D. "The interactive materials and lighting are more realistic than ever before. We could only have dreamed about this not so long ago. These days, however, we effortlessly amaze the audience with jaw dropping skies, water and landscapes."

Marcellis: "Act-3D believes that Quest3D 5.0 is the number one real-time 3D development solution for the PC platform. This is the reason why we also use it as our in-house development tool. The result is the immensely popular and ground breaking architectural movie software, Lumion."...

RTC - VisDay 2012

Dan asked if I could post this and it looks interesting so I will!

VisDay is a premier forum on advances in computer generated visualisation for the architecture, engineering and construction industries. We have pulled together a powerful line-up of speakers including Chaos Group from Bulgaria, SHW group, HKS and VEO from the United states and local talent from Flood Slicer and Atomic 3D.

Presentations include immersive 3D animations, gaming engines utilizing huge datasets, green screen live action compositing and the unveiling of the much anticipated VEO.  Attendees will be able to participate in candid, unvarnished discussions with likeminded individuals, have one-on-one access to industry experts, unique networking opportunities and instructional lectures from some of the best in the industry including step by step instructions on how to produce stunning architectural visualizations in both mental ray and V-Ray.

Where else are you going to be able to get this caliber of training or collection of industry heavy weights at a single event in Australasia?

The details for the VisDay 2012 event are as follows:

RTC 2012 North America - Register Now!

If you have not done so already go register for Revit Technolog Conference North America 2012 in Atlanta!

Once you have registered make sure you sign up for my Lab on Friday at 4:00:

I was truly hoping to do the second abstract I submitted about Design Options (considering there is not a lot out there and I am hesitant to tackle it on the blog... but it looks like the blog it will be!).

It is so cool to be on the list of speakers for RTC after all these years of reading other peoples bios!  Not to mention being placed on a page next to so many brilliant Revit minds, many of which I have admired for a long time.  I am so excited for this event and I hope that I can meet lots of my readers!

Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid...

The ACSA Annual meeting is now over and I am home. I have a lot of notes and my mind is absolutely on overdrive and I am hoping to get it all into some posts for you all.  But first, the final session I attended included Phil Bernstein and was a great way to end my trip.

After the panelists finished their opening remarks the floor was open for questions.  As Phil points out in his post there were some interesting points arising from the discussion.  There is a little quote from Phil that stuck with me.  He said, and I am paraphrasing, "the complexity of the problem has surpassed our ability [as educators] to teach students how to grasp it".  Myself, as a student, found it fascinating to witness a room full of highly educated collegiate professors without an answer.  The tone was almost uneasy as I observed the room.  I can't quite put my finger on it, but it was almost as if the attendees were left with a heightened sense of, dare I say, fright.

As I watched the audience leave the room, almost appearing to have seen a ghost, I began to wonder where we, the students, belong in this discussion.  If we are the most affected by these discussions maybe we belong in the room.  The discussion spoke heavily on the idea of convergence (instead of "integration").  Perhaps the convergence of students and teachers will provide the answers?

As Phil notes in his post the very last questions left much food for thought.  The concern of one professor was the absence of the "visual" in the discussion.  I am going to argue that with the introduction of visual, energetic, hopeful, and technological aptitude of the student will not allow the "visual" to be forgotten in such discussions.

AISC Student Membership - DISCOUNTS! #ACSA

I had a nice conversation with the woman running the AISC (American Institute of Steel Construction) table here at ACSA (The AISC booth was near the AIAS booth which was adjacent to the ACI and MIT booth...too many damn acronyms).  Anyways, Maria Mnookin explained to me the benefits of becoming an AISC Student Member.  The biggest bonus is the discount on AISC Manuals... Anyone in an Architecture program should be familiar with this beast of a book.

I want to pass the information on to you all because it does seem very worth it... oh and it is free for students.

Click here to sign up and explore the benefits of becoming an AISC Student/Faculty member...

Thanks Maria!

#ACSA - Boston - Day 1 - Travel

I am leaving the office in a little while to head up to Boston for the 100th Annual ACSA Meeting.  The weather is miserable so it will be an interesting drive.  I am pretty excited to discuss Revit, BIM, and the likes with other professors and students in the field of Architecture.  The professors and students at this event will be and are the future of the industry.  They will be my future colleagues, competition, and partners and boy do I have a lot to discuss with them!

I will try and blog or tweet as much as possible while I am there (follow me on Twitter @TheRevitKid ).

Autodesk Lead the Way with Better Design Event

BIM 2013....  what will it bring?  Being a beta tester and the likes I have some sort of an idea but I am still registering for this event and I think you should to...  Aren't you a bit curious to see what the 2013 versions of Revit will hold?  The last "13" release I remember is AutoCAD R13...
